My work brings about a link
with things so much larger than myself. It
ties me to both the internal and external, with the
very small and
the incredibly large, with the mundane and the sacred.
When I work, I am reminded that we are
connected in a very fundamental ways. It is the connective power of the
process
that intrigues me. The work is like
looking over water and seeing in no uncertain terms, the vast horizon
is
curved. The most thrilling part of
experiencing that curve is the hard physical evidence that I sit on
curve with
so many others.
I
begin a piece by responding to an idea from a thought or
something seen then captured in memory, a piece of life that has
grabbed
me. It is an organic process, growing
from this simple seed towards fruition. The
singularity of the image is what drives all the
decisions. All is subordinate to it, the
choice of
processes, materials, outcomes. I am
driven to find the correct solution that honors the image in the most
honest
way I can devise. There is a need to reveal the essence of the subject
matter
in a direct way. I work with a range of
mediums and materials. It isn’t
without
its obstacles, detours, moments of pure serendipity balanced with the
child
wonder of it all. |
